[18F]K-40 is a radiopharmaceutical PET (positron emission tomography) imaging tracer designed to bind to the α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptor in the brain. Developed by the Takeda Science Foundation, it is used to characterize brain kinetics, volume of distribution, and receptor binding in humans. It is often compared to the established tracer [11C]K-2. AMPA receptors are critical for fast excitatory synaptic transmission in the central nervous system and are implicated in various neurological and psychiatric disorders.
